Finding a new hobby. May 29, 2007

I’ve started to learn how to sew and I’m having so much fun. I had already been sewing clothes for Becca but then I have started sewing for myself. I completed my first dress for someone else just this last weekend. Yay! And it turned out really nice. I had found an old pattern at my Grandma’s from the 1940’s. Its a halter top sundress. Its just darling. Hopefully I’ll be able to post a picture of it later. My camera isn’t working right now. But I’m wondering if I can make money doing this. I’m sure I could but I’ll need to get more proficient at it.

I got all the books I could from the library on sewing. Some of them weren’t very helpful but the rest were. I am just unbelievably excited about all of this. I learned how to custom fit a pattern so that it fits perfectly. Which is really important for me because I have such a large chest that if I make a shirt or dress to fit my top, the rest of the dress or shirt is too big and just doesn’t look good. So if any of you out there decide you might want me to make something for you, just ask. I’d like to try!

It has been interesting, because at first Neil didn’t get it. My desire to sew and create pretty clothes just didn’t make sense to him. He thought ” Just go to the store and buy clothes” But now that he has seen some of the things that I have made, he doesn’t seem to think it is so silly now. I’m surprised at how much I love it. When I was younger and my mom tried to teach me to sew, I hated it. I didn’t have the patience for checking details. But now I love the details. I love finding out a technique that finishes the clothes just a little nicer or something I can add that just adds a special touch.

My Grandma is letting me use her sewing machine and it is such a nice machine. It had sat in her house for at least 15 years, never used and I plugged it in and oiled it and it just took right off. It works great and the possibilities are bigger for me to find creative uses for all the stiches.

Oh! I’m having so much fun!!!

Spring is here!!! May 1, 2007

Wow, I haven’t blogged in forever! Summer…oops I mean spring is finally here. We had 93 degrees the last couple of days. Crazy!! Thankfully today a cold front blew through and its only in the 70’s now. I’ll take the hot weather later. :)

Well, I don’t know if I have any one reading this often or not but I’ll update you all on the happenings around here. :)

We have switched churches. Not a move made lightly or easily I’ll tell you but for now we seem to be pretty happy at Southern Hills. The kids really seem to enjoy their Sunday School class and the services run at a more convenient time for us.

We only have a month left of school!!! Becca has worked so hard this last year and we are really looking forward to a break. Next year will be a challenge for me just because I’ll have a kindergartner and a first grader! Yikes! I better get my rear in gear cuz it’ll be a mess if I don’t get myself organized.

Danny is crawling. He has this little nerf ball that he will “chase” all over the house. Its pretty cute! He’s gotten two teeth and has started eating baby food.

Becca is still doing ballet. We are gearing up for the recital. I’m praying that she will go through with it and actually perform. If you think of it you all could be praying too. If you want tickets, give me a call and I can sell you one. We have to buy our own tickets. You would think that mom and dad would at least get free tickets. Oh well.

James is really looking forward to starting school this next year. We’ve been doing a little here and there in preparation for Kindergarten but nothing consistent. He loves to learn new things and is very interested in knowing how things work. I find myself google-ing lots of things just to find things out for him.

Ben is getting so big. He loves to cuddle and is our master of funny faces. Some of his facial expressions just slay me. :)

Neil and I are embarking on some major remodeling this summer. We have a front porch to fix and then a complete redo of the bathroom and kitchen. Its going to be a ton of work but worth it because then, hopefully, we’ll be able to get it sold.

Things are good. I’m in the process of doing some major decluttering. Getting rid of a ton of stuff that I can’t believe I’ve held on to for the last 10 years and 7 moves. It feels good to get rid of all this stuff and not having it laying around anymore. Freecycle has been so nice for getting rid of the stuff that isn’t ready for the dump but not good enough for the flea market booth.

Well, I need to get dinner on. Hopefully it won’t take me so long to blog again.
